Brian Davies Award:
At the IoA Summer School in August this year, which was held at Oatridge College near Edinburgh, Hut member Philip Spanos - that’s him below - was awarded the Brian Davies Shield for the most improved student during the week. However at the end of the week Philip was unfortunate enough to break his collarbone. We all wish him well and look forward to training with him again when he has recovered.

Grading success!

Congratulations go to Philip Spanos who passed his 5th Kyu grading in June at The Hut. A grinning Phil is pictured here with Instructor Tanith Barry.

IoA Winter School 2018:

The IoA Winter School this year was held at Spalding Aikido Club over the weekend of 23/24/25 March. Friday afternoon was devoted to 1st & 2nd Dan gradings. Slough Centre Aikido members Rob Dunford gained his 2nd Dan and Wayne Eveleigh 1st Dan.

Saturday morning kicked off with four consecutive 3rd Dan gradings dealing with the Riai System, all four candidates were successful, three from IoA dojos in Scotland, plus Rod Davis from The Hut. The rest of the day was taken up with various training sessions, including one by IoA 5th Dans in which our Sensei, Paul Foster-Dent, Sensei John Kingsbury, who teaches our Children’s Class and former Hut member Sensei Colin Simpson took part.

Hut member Ali Khan, who also teaches at the Kingston Club and Ken Kidston, who teaches our Children’s class from time to time, received their 4th Dans. Mike Jackson from The Hut received his 2nd Dan.

Sunday sessions included a Weapons demo by a visiting Sensei from Ireland and sessions by three female Aikidoka, including our own 3rd Dan Janet Pain and 2nd Dan Tanith Barry.

On Monday 12 February Aikidoka from The Hut Dojo and Slough Centre Aikido Club gathered for a  special training session at The Hut in memory of the founder of the Institute of Aikido, Sensei Haydn Foster, who passed away 7 years ago.  In charge of the evening was Sensei Foster’s grandson, Sensei Paul Foster-Dent, who invited each Dan grade present to take a teaching spot. Also on the mat was Sensei William Timms of the Governing Board of the IoA. The session ended in the traditional way in the bar of The Hut Pub, where Sensei Foster himself had sunk many a refreshing pint with his students after training.
